Paradox / Cassette Tape - c24 / PAR047

Lord Viper

Frank Rouch established himself as a talented enigma in the Chicago music scene before sailing to Indiana with his wife. His band with Kenny Klemaier, King Tuts Tomb, remains active with Frank commuting to the city every so often as they recently released a 12″ with 1980 Records. Lord Viper is his solo work, which was once referred to as his “Industrial” project. Indeed, Paradox does include some rudimentary and raucous elements of said genre particularly in the electronic drum pulsations and occasional bizarre one shot edits, but Lord VIper also brings a hook sensibility and laces these songs with pummeling guitar churn. Despite sticking mostly to the thick distorted guitar and drum machine recipe, Paradox explores a number of genres starting with heavy punk before delving into more electronic and even dance styles. This won’t win awards for fidelity, however, that is not the point, and Frank & co. nail the tones on this one; drums are pounding and extremely propulsive, riffs are as radical as they are sonically harmonious, and vocals could be described as Alan Vega or Wesley WIllis thru a Peavey Rage 158.
