No Ya Totally Reality / Cassette Tape, Digital / PAR044

ADT is short for ‘American District Telegraphy,’ but you probably recognize the acronym from that classic blue sticker that adorns about two-thirds of American homes. It just so happens that a Chicago improv / “fake jazz” troupe decided that ADT was also the banner under which they would operate. Formed by Jake Acosta (Teen River, Famous Laughs, Lake Paradise), Kyle Drouin & Johnny D (Spooky Moon, Wild Oats); ADT is a free-for-all exploration of electronics, free jazz, drone, krautrock, ambient, & whatever else you want to hear in it.

Ben Billington (Tiger Hatchery, Quicksails) & Tom Owens (Potions, Distractions) joined the group in the late 2013, further expanding the realm with bombastic drum kit & electric guitar, nicely rounding out the already developing ADT mix of free pysch bass, ‘trumpet thru fx,’ and bubbly electronics. The A side on this tape is a nascent practice recording, where Billington adds percussive chimes to the far-out electronic tunnel that Drouin & Acosta are digging. Soon the sounds become more mechanical, drums sink in and out of syncopation; drones leap back and forth in rhythm. Before long we are in all out hyper free jazz meets electronic mode, complete with expressive trumpet solos…..

By nature, ADT only stays on one groove for so long. Or rather, the group takes pleasure in slipping in and out of the spontaneous grooves it is creating, drifting from one mood to another, different themes & personnel taking the lead while others listen and figure out where to go next. The B side shows the original trio in a live setting, displaying their more sparse side. Wandering trumpet, echo beat madness, no-input stabs, & bowed electric bass work together to create a rolling cloud of mystique.
